The common mistake everyone makes with the electric kettle

We use it every day, sometimes several times a day… and yet, few of us really know how to use it properly. Between forgetting to remove limescale, filling it to the brim, and leaving it plugged in all the time, some seemingly harmless mistakes can shorten its lifespan—or spoil the taste of your morning tea. So, are you sure you’re using your kettle correctly?

The most common mistakes we make without realizing it

Too much water in the kettle.

This is a classic mistake! Filling above the “max” mark might seem convenient, but it’s actually risky: boiling water can spurt from the spout and cause splashes. Plus, it unnecessarily puts strain on the automatic shut-off system and prematurely wears out the seals. The moral of the story: only fill it as much as you need.

The kettle was dry.

One oversight, one careless gesture, and whoops! You start boiling without water. Bad idea: the heating element heats up in a vacuum, which can damage it. The right thing to do: always check the water level before pressing the button.

Limestone, that invisible enemy.

It’s often forgotten, but these whitish deposits reduce the appliance’s efficiency, lengthen heating time, and can even slightly alter the taste of the water. Regular descaling  is therefore essential (more on this below).
